Time has sprung forward and spring and is officially in the air! Spring doesn’t officially start until March 20th, but with the warmer weather and longer days, it feels like it’s here already.
So that means it’s time to add some fresh and lighter meals to the menu!
And what a better way to jump into spring recipes than with Frito Taco Bowls!
They are fresh and light, yet full of flavor and is of course filling. And the Fritos are just the icing on the cake.
As always we are simplifying this meal.
So no homemade taco seasoning for this recipe. We are using a package of McCormick taco seasoning.
Once, your meat is fully cooked, all you have to do is add the taco seasoning to your meat, then add water and allow the seasoning to simmer into the meat.
It is also important to season the meat while you are cooking it. All you need is a little seasoning salt, garlic salt and black pepper. And of course yellow onion. Although we are also using the McCormick seasoning, the meat still needs to be seasoned while it’s cooking.
In my experience, the flavor is not as great if the meat is not seasoned while it’s cooking.
We are also using fresh diced yellow onion for this recipe. You can’t beat natural flavor from a fresh onion.
Place it right in the skillet while you are cooking the meat. By the time the meat is done, the onion will be softened.
So a taco bowl is not a taco bowl without some great toppings as well. We used diced Roma tomatoes. They have a great flavor and dice very well. Make sure that you pick one that is firm for easier slicing. Then also, iceberg lettuce and you can’t forget the cheese.
We used cheddar jack cheese for this recipe, but a fiesta blend cheese would also give this taco bowl and little more pizzaz. And you can’t forget the sour cream and the salsa.
If you like a little more heat, go ahead and add jalapeno as well. Some people also enjoy fresh diced onion on their taco bowls.

- 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
- 1/4 c of yellow onion- diced
- 1/2 tsp of seasoned salt
- 1/2 tsp of garlic salt
- 1/8 tsp of black pepper
- 1 8 oz. package of McCormick Taco Seasoning
- Iceberg lettuce
- Roma tomato
- Sharp shredded cheese
- Sour cream
- Picante sauce
- In a large skillet, add beef and season with onion, seasoned salt, garlic salt and black pepper.
- Cook beef until brown.
- Once the meat has browned, drain the excess oil.
- Add taco seasoning to the meat and water according to package instructions.
- Mix together well and cover the pan with a lid.
- Simmer beef on low heat for 5 minutes.
- Remove from the hit, stir and serve with your desired amount of toppings.
