Purple Hull Peas and Okra

Purple Hull Peas are similar to black eye peas, but stand in their own lane.  In my opinion, they have more flavor and are creamier than black eye peas. Have you ever had purple hull peas?

If not you are missing out and have to try them asap! This recipe is great by itself or as a side dish.

This dish is simply frozen purple hull peas, frozen okra, a smoked turkey neck, onion, water and spices.

No hulling peas, no chopping okra and also no standing over the stove. That’s why we are using frozen peas and okra. They are just as good as the fresh ones.

To make this recipe, first boil your turkey neck for about an hour by itself. Pour off about half of the water that you cooked the turkey necks in and add in your peas.

You want to cook the peas first because they take the longest to cook.

Then add in your okra and cook for an additional thirty minutes. Those who aren’t as familiar with southern cooking may ask what’s up with the turkey neck?

The turkey neck is optional, but in the south, if we make peas, beans or greens were adding turkey necks, salt pork, or a ham hocks.

The meats and the water the meat is cooked in enhances the flavor of the dish.

For those who aren’t quite ready to take it that far, just leave the turkey neck out.

The peas will still be good without it. But sooner or later, your curiosity will get the best of you and I’m sure you will try it lol!

Enjoy!

That looks like some comfort food! I am and always have been obsessed with pickled okra so I’m sure anything with cooked okra would be great. Thanks for the recipe.
